Tableau in Journalism

In the past, Tableau has been making headlines for offering free software licenses to students and teachers. A recent partnership between Tableau and journalist Cheryl Phillips, a new type of curriculum has been developed and will also be released for free. This partnership is a well-developed course program titled: Introduction to Data Journalism, and concentrates on the importance of data literacy in the media landscape. Phillips noted: “In today’s media landscape, it is more important than ever for journalists to rely on data to investigate and report news accurately.”

The curriculum is designed as a 10-week course with different sections. Modules include all the lecture slides, notes and exercises that would be needed to teach the course. Through using the software, students will be able to input and interpret data, as well as transforming raw information into graphic visualizations. Tableau and journalists know the current online struggle of fake news, and they know the imperativeness of making a change. Tableau decided it was time for their platform to enable journalists to tell stories more accurately and effectively.
